Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The present master thesis deals with possible potentials of the rooftop landscape of Vienna, with focus on buildings and roofs suitable for the creation of living space and housing in the third district of Vienna.
As the total population of Vienna is expected to increase in future, the demand for more housing area per inhabitant as well as the demand for more green spaces is going to rise equally. Due to this increasing space requirements, more and more open space is sealed, which causes insufficient natural air cooling during nighttimes. Global temperatures are on the rise and will most likely cause increasing heat waves in summers. Therefore plants and vegetation have become almost as important for future urban planning as housing, because green space does not only serve as natural air conditioning but is also important for the mental and physical health of inhabitants.
Good data maintenance, such as processing, analysis and visualisation of information, is crucial for urban planning and optimal, future-oriented development of living spaces. One tool of data maintenance, distribution and storage is the usage of 3D-city-models. Those models can come in different data formats, such as CityGML or WMTS, which offer different possibilities for processing and visualisation of available information and data. Some common data formats will be discussed in the course of this thesis in more detail and compared in regard to their advantages and disadvantages concerning the topic at hand.
Different potentials for optimal space usage on the rooftops of Vienna have been calculated and investigated using GIS based analysis and tools. Three potentials were identified, namely the additional-storey-potential, the roof-extension-potential as well as the green-roof-potential. Those potentials provide astonishing possibilities to create new living spaces like flats or “parks on the roof”. Roof-extensions and additional storeys might add more than 4,000 new flats to the third district of Vienna, while green spaces on flat roofs could increase the public park area of the district by 25 ha. This might be enough to accommodate 50 % of the predicted population increase of the district by 2038 in new flats without the need to seal open spaces and greens. The additional people could use more green space with easier access than before while at the same time enjoy naturally cooled living spaces.
The thesis ends with an assessment of the potentials by calculation of special graduations and prospects for future work and optimisation, such as integration of construction physics into the calculations, concerning the topic at hand.
