Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Due to increased immigration and the involved cultural differences, natives as well as the new members of a society experience intercultural encounters. In the service sector, issues appear when employees and customers belong to different cultures. According to recent theories of service marketing, customers are considered as active co-producer of the service, who can bring skills and values to the service. Due to their cultural background, immigrants often lack the necessary knowledge to be able to actively participate in a service. The aim of this work is to investigate these cultural differences that influence the customer’s participation. In a first step, the extent to which generalized trust and the integration into social relationships and cultural events of the host country affect the immigrant's ethnic orientation and therefore the acculturation process. Furthermore, the influence of this ethnic orientation on the motivation and expertise of the participation in the service process was analysed, as well as the influence on the general behaviour during this process. In the course of a study at the Austrian Employment Service (AMS), it was found that generalized trust has a positive influence on the social and cultural integration which leads to a higher identification with the culture of the host country. Furthermore, the identification with the host country leads to increased motivation as well as expertise to participate in the service. The results therefore reveal that ethnic orientation is an important factor with regard to the role of the customer as co-producer. The findings of this thesis expand the research area of acculturation and service marketing and offer service brands, public institutions and acculturating individuals theoretical contributions and implications.
