Raum und Zeit begrenzen die Handlung eines Textes, eine inhaltliche Funktionalisierung dieser Komponenten kann neue Möglichkeiten der Interpretation eröffnen. Drei für den Modernismus im englischsprachigen Raum repräsentative Texte stehen im Zentrum dieser Analyse. Für die Neudeutung des physischen und imaginierten Raumes wird Juri Lotmans Theorie über die Semiosphere, semantische Felder, und das Voranschreiten der Handlung durch das Überschreiten von binär semantisch abgegrenzten Feldern hergenommen. Die zeitliche Dimension wird mit Michail Bachtins Theorie des Chronotopos ergänzt. In dieser Theorie wird die räumliche und zeitliche Struktur eines Textes als Genre-bestimmend und gebunden an den sozio-kulturellen Kontext des Verfassers oder der Verfasserin und der Lesenden angesehen. Räumliche und sozio-kulturell zeitliche Interpretationen von Jacob’s Room (1922) von Virginia Woolf eröffnen eine neue Dimension der Kategorie Geschlecht im Kontext des Romantypus des Bildungsromans, welche vor allem im Vergleich mit A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) von James Joyce hervorgehoben wird. Das Brechen mit vorherrschenden Konventionen im Modernismus wird durch eine Analyse von Tender Buttons (1914) von Gertrude Stein nach den Aspekten konstruierter Raum und Zeit unterstrichen.

Time and space form the limits of a text, functionalising these categories opens the possibility for new interpretations. Three modernist texts are the subjects of this analysis. The underlying theoretical scope is based on the theories on spatial semantics by Yuri Lotman and the concept of the chronotope by Mikhail Bakhtin. Plot events are bound to the transgression of text intrinsic semantic boundaries and the text is inextricably bound to the context its consumer and producer are located in. This contingency of the sociocultural context is also relevant for the genre itself: Literary modernism is a product of the context of its time, the stylistic devices used by authors in order to disrupt prevalent literary traditions reflect the disruptions of the early 20th century. Jacob’s Room (1922) by Virginia Woolf, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) by James Joyce and Tender Buttons: Objects, Foods, Rooms (1914) by Gertrude Stein will be analysed with focus on manifestations of uses of space and time which qualify them to be modernist texts. The reinterpretation of the modernist bildungsroman and the failure of the prototypical protagonist will be delineated in the context of Jacob’s Room and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as well as the abandonment of the desire to be understood with regard to Tender Buttons.
