Abstract
(Deutsch)
DC beeinflussen.
Abstract
(Englisch)
For decades, Negative Campaigning (NC) as well as Dirty Campaigning (DC) have shaped especially American campaign communication. By attacking opposing politicians and their political programs, the candidates hope to gain an advantage and votes in the upcoming election. This master’s thesis draws on the existing predominantly American body of literature on such campaign strategies. Due to the lack of a clear distinction between NC and DC, this work’s central concern was to examine these two strategies as separate concepts that are also used differently by political actors. The thesis takes a deeper look into the use of NC and DC on the social media platform Twitter, which has become an important and widely used communication channel for politicians. By using a quantitative content analysis of the tweets from the two US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden on their Twitter accounts in the final months (August to November) before the 2020 election, the thesis aims to identify different factors that influence the use of NC and DC as well as differences in the use of these two strategies. The analysis of 1018 tweets identified as negative or dirty in the sample showed that being the incumbent or the challenger as well as the poll standing have a verifiable influence on the use of NC and DC. While Biden as the challenger and the leading candidate in the polls tended to attack his opponent with negative statements, an increasing probability of using DC could be observed for the incumbent Trump. Additionally, the analysis revealed that the topic (policy or character reference), the type of attack (comparative or direct), the target (presidential candidate) and the prospective time reference of an attack influence the use of NC and DC.
