Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The present paper is the first study examining the prevalence and attitude effects of negative product placement. First, a deductive definition of negative product placement with recourse to previous studies was elaborated. In a next step, using content analysis (n = 100) it was shown that negative product placement occurs in 22 % of the most successful movies. In 61 % of cases the product does not work properly, in 39 % it is evaluated negatively by one of the characters. With respect to research on evaluative conditioning it was hypothesized that a negative product placement with a positive character leads to positive effects on the viewers’ attitude towards the product – and to a negative effect with a negative character. In a 2x2 experiment (n = 390) the viewers’ evaluation of the character (positive / negative) as well as the product placement (no placement / negative placement) was varied. Contrary to the hypotheses, no significant effect of the viewers’ evaluation of the character on the attitude towards the product could be found. Independently from the evaluation of the character, negative product placement partly caused significant negative effects on attitudes towards the product. Using a focus group as well as the results from previous studies and the present paper, an integrative model of effects from both positive and negative product placement has been developed. The result is a framework of hypotheses available for future research, laying the foundation for an enhanced understanding of the effects of negative product placement within the communication sciences.
