Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Previous research suggests that the origin country of a product or brand evokes stereotypical perceptions of foreign brands in consumers’ minds and has important implications on their behaviors and brand responses. A rich body of research has been dedicated to this area of specialty from various perspectives. In this context, the present research studies the country-of-origin effect by applying the stereotype content model and the BIAS map. The research model investigates how different configurations of country stereotypes could influence consumer behaviors and brand responses and how country-related emotions might moderate the relationships between country stereotypes and consumer behavioral responses. A web-based between-subjects study was carried out on three Chinese social media platforms, where 373 Chinese participants measured their country stereotype perceptions, country-related emotions, and behaviors tendencies. SPSS was used to evaluate the data. The results indicate that the competence dimension, in particular, significantly influences the perceived formation of country-related emotions, while the warmth dimension shows less significant results. The country-related emotions of contempt, admiration, and envy do not influence consumer brand responses in a statistically meaningful way. However, this does not mean that emotions do not induce behavior tendencies, but their effect is overshadowed by other variables such as brand familiarity. Overall, the present study suggests that country- related emotions do not moderate between country stereotypes and consumer behaviors; other product-related factors might exceed their impact. The findings provide both theoretical and managerial implications by showing the limitations of stereotype-induced emotions.
