Die vorliegende Masterarbeit hat sich das Ziel einer nutzbringenden Veranschaulichung, thematischen Auseinandersetzung sowie einer vergleichenden Studie und Analyse der heute quellenhistorisch weitgehend vergessenen humoristisch-satirischen Europakarten gesetzt. Diese waren im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert besonders in Zeiten politischer Veränderungen und sozialer Umbrüche als Medium der Persiflage populär. Diese satirischen Karten bilden vor allem in ihrer kartografischen Darstellung und in ihrer signifikanten Stilistik eine exzeptionelle Sonderform in der Geschichte der Karikatur, da diese mit Hilfe einer subtilen Bildsprache sowie visueller Codes und potenziell positiver oder negativer Imaginationen außergewöhnliche und interessante Bilder des europäischen Kontinents wiedergeben. Aufgrund dessen konfrontieren uns jene (subjektiven) Europakarikaturen heute wie kein anderes Bildmedium mit einem sehr konkreten, aufschlussreichen, aber auch kritischen Abbild der jeweiligen Denkweise, sozialen Wirklichkeit und des politischen Zeitgeistes in Europa. Die wissenschaftliche Erörterung soll prinzipiell einem aufgeschlossenen, wissenschaftlichen Publikum aus der historisch-kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung ein grundlegendes und vielseitiges Verständnis für jene Thematik hinsichtlich deren Entwicklung, entsprechenden Intention und humoristischen Bedeutung vermitteln, indem der Frage nachgegangen wird, welche Konnotationen, traditionellen Bilder, visuellen Codes oder Imaginationen mit Hilfe der humoristisch-satirischen Europakarten erstellt und der Gesellschaft vermittelt wurden.

This Master's thesis aims to provide a useful illustration, thematic discussion as well as a comparative study and analysis of the Humorous-Satirical Maps of Europe, which have been largely forgotten today in terms of source history. These were popular as a medium of persiflage in the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in times of political change and social upheaval. These satirical maps constitute an exceptional special form in the history of caricature, especially in their cartographic representation and in their significant stylistics, as they reproduce unusual and interesting images of the European continent with the help of a subtle pictorial language as well as visual codes and potentially positive or negative imaginations. Because of this, those (subjective) European caricatures confront us today like no other visual medium with a very concrete, revealing, but also critical image of the respective mindset, social reality and political climate in Europe. The academic discussion is principally intended to provide an open-minded, academic audience from historical-cultural studies research with a basic and versatile understanding of that subject matter with regard to its development, corresponding intention and humorous significance by pursuing the question of which connotations, traditional images, visual codes or imaginations were created and conveyed to society with the help of the Humorous-Satirical Maps of Europe.
