Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt das Werk De Amore von Marsilio Ficino. Es wurde von Ficino 1469 als Kommentar zu Platons Symposion geschrieben. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt zwei Fragen: Erstens, was versteht Ficino unter dem Begriff der Schönheit und der Materie in De Amore, und zweitens, sind diese beiden Termini ident mit dem Verständnis von Platon.

I wrote my degree dissertation based on De Amore by Marsilio Ficino. Written in 1469 Marsilio Ficino regarded it as a comment to Plato’s Symposion. My main concern with this work are two questions: First, what does Ficino mean by the terms ’beauty and matter’, and second, are these terms identical with Plato’s understanding? To find an answer to these questions I compared the second and seventh speech from De Amore with the corresponding parts in Plato’s Symposion.
My work is divided into three parts. The first part analyzes the history of reception from Aristotle and Plato – from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, to the Renaissance. This part also comments on Humanism and its development in Italy, especially in Florence. The second part comprehends the comparison of the second and seventh speech from De Amore with Plato’s Symposion. This part also addresses the cosmological conception of Marsilio Ficino. The cosmological conception could be seen as an adoption of the concepts of‘beauty and matter’. I show that there are different categories in Ficino's uses of the terms ‘beauty and matter’. The third part deals with the divergence of ‘beauty and matter’ in De Amore and the Symposion. The main question in this section is whether Marsilio Ficino is consitent in his exposition of the concepts of ‘matter and beauty’. To answer to this important question I show where Ficino departs from the Symposion; as well as from some other significant sources , such as Neo-Platonic texts, the hermetic and orphic tradition, and some scholastic sources. We will see that Ficino, in his different usage of the terms ‘beauty and matter’ not only refers to Plotinus, Orpheus but also to Hermes Trismegistus. I also address the question why Ficino referred to other authorities other than Plato.
