Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
On the basis of the memory conflicts in Carinthia, which revolve around the topics of the Carinthian plebiscite in 1920 and the so called Abwehrkampf ("Carinthian defensive struggle") as well as Nazism, this master thesis examines the politics of history and the activities of the Slovenian Students Club in Vienna (KSŠŠD) influenced by it. For that the following research question was used: What influence did and do the experiences of the Slovene minority in Carinthia from the time of the "Carinthian defence struggle", the Carinthian plebiscite and the Nazi period have on the activities of the KSŠŠD? In order to answer the research question, the publications of the club were examined by using the grounded theory. The results show that the central element of the KSŠŠD's culture of remembrance is a commemorative event that has been held regularly since 1961 and is dedicated – among other things – to the anti-fascist resistance during World War II. The struggle for the fulfilment of the rights of the Carinthian Slovenes, which particularly characterises the activities of the KSŠŠD, is given special legitimacy by the commemoration of the resistance, which was the basis for the conclusion of the Austrian State Treaty and thus for the safeguarding of minority rights. The criticism of the celebrations of the Carinthian’s state holiday on 10th of October are also of great importance for the activities of the KSŠŠD. The rejection of these celebrations contributes irrevocably to the KSŠŠD's anti-fascist political profile.
