Europäische Wissenschaftsorganisationen haben eine etablierte Position in europäischen Integrationsprozessen. Die Europäische Weltraumorganisation (ESA) ist eine der ältesten dieser wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen, und Ungarn wurde 2015 ihr letztes Mitglied. In dieser Arbeit werde ich die Entwicklung der Weltraumaktivitäten Ungarns, eines kleinen Landes in Mitteleuropa, vorstellen und betrachten, wie der Prozess der europäischen Integration diese Entwicklung ab der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts geprägt hat. Diese Studie stützt sich auf Theorien aus dem Bereich der Science and Technology Studies (STS), in denen die Begriffe soziotechnischer Imaginationen als mein theoretisches Hauptkonzept fungieren, während gleichzeitig Begriffe wie europäischer Infrastrukturalismus und Koproduktion eine ergänzende Rolle spielen. Auf der Grundlage von sieben qualitativen, halbstrukturierten Interviews mit ungarischen Raumfahrtbeamten und einem ESA-Vertreter, in Kombination mit einer Dokumentenanalyse, argumentiere ich, dass es in den ungarischen Raumfahrtaktivitäten bezüglich der europäischen Integration vier verschiedene soziotechnische Imaginationen gab. Ich behaupte weiter, dass diese Imaginationen und politischen Entscheidungen über Weltraumaktivitäten in Ungarn koproduziert sind und zur Integration des Landes in die ESA beigetragen haben.

European scientific organizations have a well-established position in European integration processes. The European Space Agency (ESA) is one of the oldest of such scientific institutions, and Hungary became its last member in 2015. In this work, I will put forward the space evolution of Hungary, a small country from central Europe, and see how the process of European integration has shaped the country’s development of space activities starting from the second half of the 20th century. This study relies on theories from the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), in which the notions of sociotechnical imaginaries will act as my main theoretical concept, while at the same time, notions, such as European infrastructuralism and co-production, will complement it. Drawing on seven qualitative semi-structured interviews with Hungarian space officials and one ESA representative, in combination with document analysis, I argue that there were four different sociotechnical imaginaries in the Hungarian space activities regarding European integration. I further argue that these imaginaries and political decisions concerning space activities in Hungary are co-produced and they contributed to the country’s integration into ESA.
