Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This master's thesis examines the perception and use of public spaces in times of active Corona measures, which have had a significant impact on public life. The empirical study, which took place in public space, focuses on the group of adolescents and young adults, who were particularly affected in their lifestyle and leisure activities by the closure of various educational and cultural institutions, as well as the closure of restaurants and nightclubs. Since public spaces have always played a major role in the interaction of young people, the question arises whether and to what extent the interaction, use, or perception has changed in the background of the pandemic. After a brief overview of existing studies on the topic of public and private space, as well as development trends of public spaces and the importance of these for the socialization of children and adolescents, the topic of the Corona pandemic is taken up and discussed in the context of the public space and the effects on young people. Since perceptions are latent constructs of meaning that cannot simply be asked for, field research was conducted to assess the use and perception of public places, focusing on observation and qualitative interviews. The data collected in three different public spaces in Vienna, were complemented by an expert interview with a staff member of a communication project in public space. The analysis of the data showed that different connotations, between alienation, threateningness and safe space, were associated with public space, which influenced its perception. It should be noted that the factor of time also played a key role in the perception and consequently the use of public spaces, as different factors successively led to an increase in the importance of public spaces for adolescents. An initial sense of displacement resulted in a sense of community that connected users of public spaces. Thus, in the course of the pandemic, a new appreciation of public spaces, as well as a broadening of perspectives on the possibilities could be observed among adolescents and young adults.
