Moderne und postmoderne Diskurse bieten wenig Raum für metaphysische Fragestellungen. Während erstere vor-moderne, metaphysische Systeme per se ablehnen, kritisieren letztere die Möglichkeit einer metaphysischen Wahrheit an sich. Dennoch bilden metaphysische Annahmen—explizit oder implizit—die Grundlage vieler gegenwärtiger Debatten. Das Fehlen eines deliberativen, metaphysischen Diskurses hat in modernen und postmodernen Gesellschaften zu einem Zustand der Leere und Anomie geführt. Während die Metaphysik in der gegenwärtigen philosophischen Diskussion lediglich am Rande vorkommt, gewinnt sie mit den aufkommenden Strömungen der Object-Oriented Ontology, des spekulativen Realismus und des Agential Realism langsam an Bedeutung. Dazu gehören die Arbeiten von Roy Bhaskar, Zak Stein und Stuart Kauffman u. a., welche eine evolution ̈are, prozessorientierte und relationale Sicht der Welt vertreten. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Philosophie von Charles Sanders Peirce, um zu zeigen, dass Metaphysik auch heute noch betrieben werden kann. Insbesondere werde ich einen detaillierten Blick auf das Peircesche System der dreifach gegliederten Metaphysik, sowie sein Verständnis der Evolution werfen und für eine Metaphysik plädieren, die sich weder auf Prozess noch Substanz beschränkt, sondern einen Weg findet, beide zu verbinden.

Modern and postmodern discourses give little room for metaphysical inquiry. While the former reject premodern metaphysical systems, the latter critique the possibility of metaphysical truths per se. Yet, metaphysical assumptions—explicitly or implicitly— shape the foundations of many current debates, in academic philosophy and society at large. The lack of any deliberative metaphysical discourse in modern and postmodern societies has led to a meaning crisis that results in a sense of emptiness and fatigue. The exploration of abstract yet fundamental metaphysical truths an essential prerequisite for any robust and sustainable collective meaning-making processes. While the topic of metaphysics currently remains at the fringes in philosophical dis- cussions, it is slowly gaining momentum with the emerging schools of object-oriented ontology, speculative realism, agential realism and the works of Roy Bhaskar, Zak Stein and Stuart Kauffman, among others who share an evolutionary, process-oriented and relational view of the world. My project aims to show that a post-Kantian way of doing metaphysics was introduced by Charles Sanders Peirce, which takes the insights of Darwin seriously and formulates an intricate model of thought that foreshadowed many of the more recent developments in this field. I plan to closely examine Peirce’s work to indicate how the study of metaphysics can happen in a world after Kant and Darwin. Specifically, I will take a detailed look at Pierce’s system of triplicate meta- physics, and his understanding of evolution, arguing for a metaphysics that need not confine itself to either process or substance, but finds a way to bridge them.
