Diese Masterarbeit befasst sich mit dem Regionalismus als Teil des europäischen Mehrebenensystems und argumentiert für dessen bedeutende Rolle bei der Gestaltung politischer Kultur, insbesondere als Quelle der gesellschaftlichen Radikalisierung und Polarisation. Die Untersuchung dieser These beruft sich auf die mehrstufigen Governance-Prinzipien, die erklären, wie der Druck, der auf Regionen ausgeübt wird, durch die Initiierung politischer Bewegungen erwidert wird, welche höhere Regierungsebenen wiederum herausfordern. Als Grundlage wird die Geschichte des deutschen Freistaats Sachsen untersucht, wo in den letzten Jahren, im Vergleich zu anderen deutschen Gebieten, ein überproportionaler Anstieg an politischem Extremismus bemerkbar geworden ist. Diese Arbeit demonstriert, dass Sachsen dank Jahrhunderter entwickelter sozialer, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Konstrukte eine einzigartige politische Kultur bewahrt, die sich heute in Form einer erhöhten politischen Radikalisierung entfaltet. Die Relevanz der subnationalen, d.h. regionalen, Ebene soll somit erläutert werden und die bestehende Literatur zu politischen Bewegungen ergänzt werden.

This thesis applies the concept of multi-level governance to the study of regionalism, arguing for its distinct role as a catalyst in the shaping of political culture, particularly as a source of political radicalization. The thesis argues that the pressure exerted upon regions and municipalities is reciprocated through the initiation of political movements that challenge higher levels of governance in efforts to achieve a balance of power. In this equation, the position of the nation state and its role as a container of political memory is fundamental to its outcome. The principal objective of this thesis is to investigate the role and relevance of the sub-national, i.e. regional, level. It does so by investigating the past and present political processes and tensions unfolding within a specific region. As a case study, the history of the German state and region of Saxony is explored. Saxony is notable for its disproportionate rise of political extremism in comparison to other German regions over recent years. This thesis applies theories based on the existing literature on regionalism, nationalism, and forces of European integration. Additionally, it explores concepts related to studies on populism, reactionary political movements, as well as contemporary political culture and political memory in Central Europe. This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing information from several branches of knowledge, such as history, political science, anthropology, and sociology. Social science theories, such as constructivism, play a significant role in highlighting the ideational factors at the core of the thesis argument. The thesis demonstrates that the German region of Saxony maintains a unique political culture, as a result of social, political, and economic constructs developed over centuries, which unfold today in the form of a uniquely high degree of political polarization and as a source of attraction for political extremists. The thesis intends to complement existing research on the development of political culture in Europe and to underscore the relevance of the sub-national level of governance in the shaping thereof.
