Mehrsprachige Kommunikation ist eine der Grundlagen der globalen transkulturellen Kommunikation. Die Verwendung klar definierter und etablierter Terminologie macht sie glatter und genauer. Ein Aspekt der Terminologie ist die Abkürzung. Die Bedeutung von abgekürzten Formen hängt eng mit der großen Bedeutung der Terminologieklarheit und der Wirtschaftlichkeit in Zeit, Raum und Aufwand zusammen. Das Hauptproblem, dem Abkürzungen auf Englisch und Arabisch gegenüberstehen, ist das Fehlen klarer Regeln für deren Bildung, Definition und Klassifizierung. Außerdem verwendet Arabisch die Abkürzung aus verschiedenen Gründen, die in der gesamten Dissertation behandelt werden, nicht als Mittel zur Wortbildung. Die Studie untersucht abgekürzte Formen in Englisch und Arabisch mit Fokus auf die Übersetzungs- und Terminologiepraktiken im UN-Kontext, die ein fruchtbarer Boden für die Untersuchung praktischer Probleme der internationalen mehrsprachigen Kommunikation durch Übersetzungs- und Terminologiearbeit sind. Um diesen Problemen zu begegnen, wird die Norm ISO 704 als Modell für die Bildung, Definition und Klassifizierung von abgekürzten Formen sowohl in Englisch als auch in Arabisch vorgeschlagen. Eine Analyse wird auf der Grundlage von Daten durchgeführt, die aus der UNTERM-Hauptdatenbank und der zentralen Terminologiedatenbank UNTERM gesammelt werden. ISO 704 wird kritisch überprüft, und die Fähigkeit des Arabischen, abgekürzte Formen zu bilden und anzuwenden, wird ebenfalls untersucht. Die Definitionen und Bildungswege, die der Literaturübersicht entnommen wurden, wurden mit denen der UNTERM-Analyse der abgekürzten Formen und mit denen ISO 704 verglichen, um eine abschließende Aussage über die Definitionen, Formationen und Typologien der abgekürzten Formen zu erhalten. Eine weitere Analyse soll untersuchen, ob im UN-Kontext arabisch abgekürzte Formen geprägt werden können. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse haben gezeigt, dass ISO 704 mit einigen Modifikationen als Kriterium für die Bildung, Definition und Typologie von abgekürzten Formen in Englisch und Arabisch übernommen werden kann. Es gibt viele Verfahren, um die Qualität von abgekürzten Formen zu verbessern, einschließlich Hinzufügen oder Weglassen von Buchstaben oder Lauten, die Verwendung von Initialen schwacher Formen usw. Der aktuelle Stand zeigt, dass arabische abgekürzte Formen sehr selten sind, wenn sie im UN-Kontext nicht vorhanden sind. Eine andere Analyse zur Implementierung von Abkürzungen auf Arabisch zeigt jedoch, dass Arabisch seine Möglichkeiten zur Herstellung von abgekürzten Formen wie Englisch nutzen kann, vorausgesetzt, dass die Besonderheiten dieser Sprache beachtet werden. Multilingual communication is one of the foundations of global transcultural communication; it can be smoother and more accurate with the use of clearly formed and well-established terminology, and one aspect of terminology is abbreviation. The importance of abbreviated forms is closely linked to the great importance of terminology clarity and economy in time, space and effort. The main problem that faces abbreviated forms in English and Arabic is the absence of clear-cut rules for their formation, definition and classification. Besides, Arabic does not adequately make use of abbreviation as a means of word formation for several reasons that are reviewed throughout the dissertation. The study explores abbreviated forms in English and Arabic with focus on the translation and terminology practices within the UN context which is a fertile ground for investigating practical problems of international multilingual communication through translation and terminology work. To address these problems, the Standard ISO 704 is proposed as a model for the formation, definitions and classification of abbreviated forms both in English and Arabic. An analysis is conducted based on data collected from UNTERM (the UN main and central terminology database). ISO 704 is critically reviewed, and the capacity of Arabic to form and employ abbreviated forms is also examined. The definitions and methods of formation taken from the literature review were compared with those found in the analysis of the abbreviated forms in UNTERM, and with those stated in ISO 704 to reach a final statement on the definitions, formations and typology of abbreviated forms. Another analysis is designed to examine if Arabic abbreviated forms can be coined in the UN context. The results of the analysis revealed that with some modifications, ISO 704 can be adopted as a model for the formation, definition and typology of abbreviated forms in English and Arabic. Many procedures can be applied to improve the quality of abbreviated forms including addition or omission of letters or sounds, taking the initials of weak forms, etc. The current status shows that Arabic abbreviated forms are very rare in the UN context. However, another analysis on the implementation of abbreviation in Arabic shows that Arabic can use its potentials to produce abbreviated forms just like English provided that the peculiarities of that language are observed. Having a clear idea about how to form, define and classify abbreviated forms would facilitate the work of translators as terminology producers, achieve linguistic economy by saving time, effort, space, and even costs. Ultimately, this would contribute to more concise and precise multilingual communication by the use of clearly formed and well-established terms.
