Diese Arbeit untersucht, wie sich im Roman „Das Hotel New Hampshire“ des Autors John Irving am Beispiel der Romanfigur „Susie der Bär“ das Thema der Identitätskonstruktion abbildet. Der Roman kann als Entwicklungsgeschichte einer jungen Frau gelesen werden, in welcher das zentrale Thema der Identitätssuche und -konstruktion exemplarisch anhand der Romanfigur verhandelt wird. Es wird untersucht, ob und unter welchen Einschränkungen die exemplarische Analyse einer Romanfigur als Beschreibungsinstrument für Identitätskonstruktion(en) dienen kann; zudem wird inhaltlich und methodologisch diskutiert, wie sich die Beschäftigung mit (Erzähl)
Literatur aus erziehungswissenschaftlicher Perspektive begründen lässt.
Der Begriff „Identität“ wird im Kontext gegenwärtiger Theoriebildungen und Diskurse beleuchtet; in Anlehnung an die Überlegungen Keupps et. al. wird der Prozess der Identitätskonstruktion als eine subjektive, alltägliche und biographisch unabgeschlossene Passungsarbeit dargestellt. Aus sozialpädagogischer Sicht werden vor diesem Hintergrund die Konsequenzen für Entwicklungs- und Bildungsprozesse, für die Teilhabechancen an der Gesellschaft sowie für die Handlungsfähigkeit von Subjekten diskutiert. Die exemplarische Analyse der Romanfigur eröffnet einen Blick auf die Konstruktion einer Art „Schutzidentität“, mithilfe derer die Romanfigur Susie der Bär
erlebte Erfahrungen bewältigt und gleichzeitig Handlungsspielraum erlangt. Ihre „Schutzidentität“ kann als eine Form der (biographischen) Lebensbewältigung gelesen werden. Darüber hinaus eröffnet die exemplarische Analyse der Romanfigur die Frage, ob Prozesse der Identitätskonstruktion Momente von Bildungsprozessen bergen.

This thesis examines the issue of identity construction based on the figure „Suzie the Bear“ in the novel „The Hotel New Hampshire“ by the author John Irving. The novel can be read as a developmental story of a young woman called „Suzie the Bear“. The focus of research is if and under which limitations the exemplary analysis of a fictional figure can serve as a descriptive instrument for identity construction(s). It is
also being discussed how scientific research of literature can be justified from the perspective of educational science.
The term „identity“ is approached in the context of present-day theory and discourse. Identity construction is viewed as a subjective, and biographical open work. The consequences for developmental processes, for the chance of people to take part in society and for their ability to act, are discussed from a social pedagogical point of
view. The exemplary analysis shows the construction of a „protective identity“ which empowers the figure „Suzie the Bear“ to cope with negative biographical and social experiences and provides her with a certain freedom of action. Furthermore the exemplary analysis raises the question if processes of identity construction inherit educational processes.
