In der vorliegenden Untersuchung werden die Resultate einer Feldstudie vorgestellt, welche in der Dorfgemeinschaft Guior Centro in Camotán im Verwaltungsbezirk von Chiquimula durchgeführt wurde, die innerhalb der östlichen Region Guatemalas liegt, welche als Ch’orti’-Gebiet bekannt ist.
In dieser Region ist die Lebensgrundlage der Bewohner durch verschiedene Faktoren wie z.B. unregelmäßíge Regenfälle, schlechte Bodenqualität, zu geringe Anbauflächen und Bedrohung der Ernten durch Schädlingsbefall stark eingeschränkt.
Die Bevölkerung dieses Gebiets lebt in sehr prekären Verhältnissen und ist durch unvorhergesehene Ereignisse, wie beispielsweise Dürreperioden, welche die Ernährungssicherheit bedrohen, besonders gefährdet.
Anhand des „Sustainable Livelihood Approach“ wird versucht, zwei Bevölkerungsgruppen, die sich nicht nur durch ihre ethnische Zugehörigkeit, sondern auch durch ihre sozioökonomische Situation und die unterschiedlichen Produktionsformen unterscheiden, zu vergleichen. Obgleich sowohl die „Ladinos“ wie auch die „Naturales“ sich der Erzeugung von Grundnahrungsmitteln für den eigenen Verbrauch widmen, besitzen die Ladinos größere Anbauflächen und betreiben andere Aktivitäten wie z.B. den An- und Verkauf von Kaffee und gewerblichen Anbau von Erzeugnissen.
Die unterschiedlichen Anschauungsweisen der Mitglieder beider Gruppen hinsichtlich Wohlbefinden, Armut und Entwicklung sollen hierbei analysiert werden. Außerdem werden die Strategien der Existenzsicherung beider Gruppen sowie ihr Zugang zu den unterschiedlichen Kapitalarten und Programmen der verschiedenen dort tätigen Organisationen verglichen. Es wird nach einer Erklärung für diese Unterschiede gesucht und auf welche Weise diese die Vulnerabilität der Menschen verringern oder verstärken.
Durch die vorliegende Untersuchung konnte bestätigt werden, dass diese Unterschiede bezüglich Wohlbefinden, Armut und Entwicklung sowie in den Strategien der Existenzsicherung und im Zugang zu Kapitalen tatsächlich existieren.

This is a presentation of a research carried out at Guior Centro, a community located in the municipality of Camotán, Department of Chiquimula, within the Guatemalan Eastern region known as the ch’orti’ area.
The area shows serious limitations with regard to the livelihood of its inhabitants, which are erratic rainfalls, poor soil quality, reduced extension of the land plots, and pests that damage the crops. The population in this region lives in a precarious situation, and is very vulnerable to shocks, such as droughts, that endanger food security in the region.
By using the sustainable livelihood approach, a comparison between two groups is done. These groups are different not only because if their ethnicity, but also due to their social and economic situation, and to their production styles. Even if both “ladinos” and “naturals” are dedicated to the production of basic crops for their own consumption, “ladinos” own bigger land plots, and work also in other activities such as purchase and sale of coffee and the planting of commercial crops.
It is sought to analyze the differences in how the members of both groups conceive what wellbeing, poverty, and development are. Also, a comparison is made among the strategies of these groups’ livelihoods, as well as their access to different types of capital and to the programs of the various organizations working in that community. An attempt is done to explain why these differences take place, and how they influence in reducing or increasing these people’s vulnerabilities.
With this research it was possible to confirm the existence of such differences regarding the beliefs about wellbeing, poverty and development as well as about livelihood strategies and access to different types of capital and opportunities
