Seit einigen Jahren werden Bergregionen and andere ökoregionale Einheiten zunehmend als transnational-verbundene Regionen angesehen. Das ist speziell im Alpenraum der Fall, welcher als Pionierregion in diesem Zusammenhang gilt. Ein wichtiger Teil wird hierbei transnationalen Netzwerken zu Teil, welche eine wichtige Rolle in der Entstehung der zusammenhängenden Region spielen. Dies wird als zwei-seitiger Antrieb beschrieben, einerseits durch bottom-up, wie auch durch topdown Initiativen. Die Assemblage pan-alpiner Netzwerke, die meisten in Verbindung mit CIPRA, stellen den zentralen Verbindungspunkt dieser beiden Stränge dar. Der Verein, welcher in dieser Arbeit untersucht wird, Alpenstadt des Jahres (AdJ), gehört zu diesen. Angesichts der Klimakrise, wie auch weiteren Herausforderungen der Region, wird argumentiert, dass diese Netzwerke zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Faktoren, wie Netzwerke, am Beispiel von AdJ, zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung der Alpen beitragen können, ist die übergeordnete Fragestellung dieser Thesis. Konzeptionell wird auf Netzwerktheorie, insbesondere Soziale Netzwerktheorie, zurückgegriffen, während auf empirischer Seite AdJ qualitativ untersucht wird. Es zeigt sich, dass AdJ eine kleine, aber bedeutende Rolle in der nachhaltigen Entwicklung der Alpenregion spielt. Basierend auf den Erkenntnissen aus der Netzwerktheorie zeigen sich aber bestimmte Faktoren, welche die Effektivität des Netzwerkes beeinflussen. AdJ muss demnach weiter an seiner internen und externen Struktur, wie auch seinem thematischen Fokus arbeiten. Abschließend werden Handlungsempfehlungen für transnational-aktive Städtenetzwerke wie AdJ abgeleitet.

In recent years, mountainous regions and other ecoregional entities have increasingly been recognized as transnational, connected areas. This is particularly the case for the alpine region, which acts as a role model in this regard. An important aspect in this comes to panAlpine networks, which play an important part in the making of the region. This is described as a two-fold impetus, with both bottom-up and top-down impulses. The assembly of pan-alpine networks, most of which are connected to CIPRA, play an important part in connecting both strands. The association in question in this thesis, Alpine Town of the Year (AtY), is an example of such networks. In the face of the climate crisis, as well as other challenges of the region, it is argued that the importance of these networks is ever-increasing. The factors, as to how networks can successfully contribute to the sustainable development of the region is the overarching question of this work, by the example of AtY. Conceptually, the principles of network theory, in particular Social Network Theory, are used, while empirically, AtY is investigated using qualitative methodology. It is found that AtY plays a small, but significant role within sustainable regional development of the Alps. However, certain crucial parameters that determine the effectiveness of the networks are found. To further improve their output, the network needs to work on both its internal and external structure, as well as refine its thematic focus. From the overall insights of the work, pivotal recommendations for transnational city networks are derived.
