Im Zusammenhang mit der zunehmenden globalen Mobilität ist es wichtig, unser Verständnis der Begriffe "Ort" und "Heimat" zu überprüfen. Die Betrachtung von Heimat und Ort als facettenreiche und dynamische emotionale und soziale Konstrukte kann uns helfen zu verstehen, wie Menschen mit der Welt um sie herum in Beziehung stehen. Ein Ansatz, der die Prozesse berücksichtigt, die das Gefühl für den Ort oder die Konstruktion der städtischen Heimat von in der Stadt lebenden Zuwanderern beeinflussen und beeinflussen, kann die Erfahrung von Mobilität/Migration auf städtischer Ebene näher beleuchten. Obwohl Irland ein Land mit einer langen Emigrationsgeschichte und einer starken diasporischen Identität ist, wurde den Prozessen der Ortsbildung irischer Emigranten in Europa nicht so viel Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wie denen in englischsprachigen Ländern, die aus früheren Migrationswellen resultieren. Diese Arbeit verwendet einen operationalisierten Rahmen, der auf der Arbeit von Fathi & Ní Laoire (2021) basiert, um die Erfahrungen irischer Emigranten in Kopenhagen und Madrid zu untersuchen. Ausgehend von einem Ansatz, der Ort und Heimat als dynamische und nicht festgelegte Konzepte betrachtet, wird aufgezeigt, wie diese interessante und vielfältige Gemeinschaft ihre urbane Heimat konstruiert und ein Gefühl für ihren Platz in der Stadt entwickelt und wie ihnen dies letztlich hilft, ihren Platz in der heutigen schnelllebigen Welt zu verstehen.

In the context of increasing global mobility, it is important to examine our understanding of the concepts of ‘place’ and ‘home’. Viewing both home and place as multi-faceted and dynamic emotional and social constructs can help us understand how people relate to the world around them. An approach which considers the processes that affect and inform the sense of place or construction of urban home for immigrants living in the city can shed further light on the experience of mobility/migration at the urban level. Despite the fact that Ireland is a country with a long history of emigration and a strong diasporic identity, the place-making processes of Irish emigrants in Europe have not received as much attention as those in English-speaking countries resulting from previous waves of migration. This thesis uses an operationalised framework based on the work of Fathi & Ní Laoire (2021) to explore the experiences of Irish emigrants in Copenhagen and Madrid. Taking an approach to place and home as concepts which are dynamic and unfixed, it highlights the ways in which this interesting and varied community constructs urban home and form a sense of place in the city, and ultimately, how this helps them to understand their place in today’s fast-paced world.
