Geleitet vom Interesse an einer föderierten Europäischen Platformisierung wurde das Scheitern der Europäischen 5G Politik untersucht. Ausgehend von einem Internet-Governance Ansatz und Kultureller Politischen Ökonomie, wurde HMPA genutzt, um die Entwicklung Europäischer Telekommunikationspolitik in den letzten zwanzig Jahren zu untersuchen. Ergebnis war, dass die Auswirkungen einer stattgefundenen Politisierung der Vorteile offener Netzwerke durch transnationale Europäische Telekommunikationsfirmen begrenzt wurden. Möglich war dies aufgrund der gegenwärtigen Konfiguration der EU, sowie ihrer Krisenpolitik in den 2010er Jahren. Die Ergebnisse wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Relevanz für die Platformisierungsforschung diskutiert.

In pursuing a federated European platformization, the failure of the EU’s 5G policy was investigated. Based on an internet governance approach and the tools offered by cultural political economy, HMPA was used to investigate the development of European telecommunications policy in the past twenty years. Central findings were that despite there having been a politicization of the benefits of open networks, the impact of this politicization on the implementation of 5G was delimited by transnational European telecommunication companies. This was possible due to the contemporary configuration of the EU and its response to the financial crisis. Results were discussed concerning how they supplement the scientific project of studying the transformational process of platformization.
