Im Zentrum des Interesses steht die Frage, wie der Inhalt des Grünen Buches, die «paradigmatische Kurzfassung» der Dritten Universaltheorie, im Kontext der Geschichte Libyens – Kolonialismus, Imperialismus, Revolution – zu verstehen ist. Gemäß dem Titel «Von der Kolonie zur ‹Dritten-Welt›-Revolution» soll auch gezeigt werden ob sie als «Befreiungsideologie» verstanden werden kann (für Libyen und die Welt – also universal?) oder bloß als Legitimationstheorie dient (für ihren Verfasser Qaddafi bzw. das libysche Regime).
Den Hauptteil bildet also eine Analyse und Interpretation der Dritten Universaltheorie. Dabei wird in einer kritischen Diskursanalyse das vorhandene Material (The Green Book als Primärquelle) ausgewertet und die Dritte Universaltheorie auf einer abstrakten Ebene aber auch auf ihre «Praxistauglichkeit» hin untersucht. Den Rahmen bildet eine Untersuchung der historisch-politischen Entwicklung Libyens von der Kolonialzeit bis zur Revolution (die, beginnend mit dem 1. September 1969, als laufender Prozess verstanden wird, der noch nicht abgeschlossen ist). Denn für die Analyse und Bewertung des Grünen Buches ist vor allem der Kontext seiner Entstehung interessant; d.h. die Dritte Universaltheorie wird v.a. im Lichte dieser «Vorgeschichte» untersucht; hingegen werden bei der Untersuchung der Auswirkungen (realpolitische, soziale, ökonomische Aspekte) auf das politische und gesellschaftliche Leben in Libyen auch aktuellere Entwicklungen in Betracht gezogen.
Im Zuge der Analyse wird versucht, zu einem tieferen Verständnis von historischen und gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen in Libyen – gibt es den «libyschen Sonderweg»? – zu gelangen und eine kritische Einschätzung der politischen Leistungen Qaddafis – gleichermaßen, je nach Standpunkt, verehrt und dämonisiert – zu treffen. In diesem Sinne soll die Arbeit entmystifizieren: das «Phänomen Qaddafi» erklären, eine Bewertung seiner Theorie vornehmen, sowie die politischen und sozialen Auswirkungen untersuchen.

In the center of interest is the question of how the contents of the Green Book, the «paradig-matic summary» of the Third Universal Theory, can be understood in the context of the history of Libya: colonialism, imperialism, and revolution. Under the title «Von der Kolonie zur ‹Dritten-Welt›-Revolution» («From the Colony to ‹Third-World›-Revolution») will also be shown whether it can be understood as «Befreiungsideologie» (for Libya and the world?) or merely as a theory to legitimize power (of its author Qaddafi or the Libyan regime).
So the main part is an analysis and interpretation of the Third Universal Theory. It is evaluated in a critical discourse analysis of the existing material (The Green Book as the primary source). The Third Universal Theory is investigated on an abstract level, but also to its practicability. The framework provides an analysis of historical and political developments of Libya from the colonial period to the revolution (which will be understood starting from 1 September 1969, as an ongoing process that is not yet completed). Indeed, for the analysis and evaluation of the Green Book the context of its creation is of particular interest. The Third Universal Theory is examined in the light of this historical context and in the investigation of the effects (actual political, social, economic aspects) on the political and social life in Libya there’re also more recent developments taken into consideration.
The analysis wants to give a deeper understanding of historical and actual developments in Libya and to make a critical assessment of the political benefits Qaddafis – equally, depending on your view, adored and demonized – too. In this sense, the work tries to demystify the «phenomenon Qaddafi», make an assessment of his theory, and examine the political and social implications.
