Abstract
(Deutsch)
Die Masterarbeit „In the Light of Neo-Colonialism: The Impact of CSR-Decisions by Western Firms on the Life of West African Cocoa Farmers.
Abstract

The thesis „In the Light of Neo-Colonialism: The Impact of CSR-Decisions by Western Firms on the Life of West African Cocoa Farmers. A Single Case Study of Tony’s Chocolonely and the Cocoa Trade in Ghana“ deals with the implications of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices employed by Western firms on the cocoa farming communities in Ghana, with a specific focus on the chocolate manufacturer Tony's Chocolonely. Employing the grounded theory approach, twelve transcripts, eleven from interviews and one from the documentary “Golden Seeds” by David Boanuh, have been analysed and contextualised by drawing upon existing literature. Notably significant works thereby are the FAIR report published annually by Tony’s Chocolonely and the Cocoa Barometer 2022 by Fountain and Hütz-Adams. The discussion is embedded in the broader discourse on global value networks, corporate social responsibility, and neo-colonialism. The synthesis of the various sources has illuminated that Western companies can both uphold the South-North power imbalance through gate keeping, and mitigate it by empowering farmers through CSR-practices, such as farmer training, community development, and increasing cocoa bean prices. The latter, in particular, has emerged as the most potent means of addressing critical issues such as poverty, child labor, and deforestation prevalent within the cocoa farming communities.
