Wissenschaftliche und ethische Aussagen werden allgemein als diametral zueinander gesehen. In The Collapse of the fact/value Dichotomy vertritt Putnam die These, dass diese Dichotomie nicht aufrecht zu erhalten ist. Deshalb ist es notwendig, eine neue Konzeption praktischer Rationalität zu entwerfen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Putnams Ausführungen dazu zu untersuchen. Putnams Ansatz ist im Pragmatismus verwurzelt, den er um seine Verflechtungsthese erweitert. Nach dieser These ist die Einbeziehung von Werturteilen in die praktische Rationalität möglich. Für Akteure wird es rational, über ihre eigenen Werte zu entscheiden. Diese Werte sind nicht endgültig oder normativ, sondern müssen rationalen Diskursen standhalten. Der Diskurs wird dabei als ein komplexer und kontextabhängiger Prozess verstanden. Werturteile und Begründung (Validität) sind nun miteinander verknüpft. Putnam behauptet, dass Objektivität in der Ethik erreicht werden kann. Der Zusammenbruch der Fakten-/Werturteil-Dichotomie erfordert ein Umdenken in der Metaphysik und normativen Ethik und bringt eine Form praktischer Rationalität hervor, die auf Handlungsfähigkeit, Praxis und Kollektivität basiert.

The common view today is that scientific and ethical statements are seen as diametral to each other. In The Collapse of the fact/value Dichotomy Putnam states that the view of these strict dichotomies is unattainable. With the collapse of the dichotomy of fact and value, there is need for a new conception of practical rationality. The aim of the thesis is to examine Putnam’s conception of practical rationality in view of this collapse. His idea is rooted in pragmatism and is contingent on the premise of the entanglement thesis. Through the inclusion of values, it is rational for an agent to choose their own values. This standpoint is not final, or normative. Reasons need to be objectively justified through rational testing. Rationality is understood as a complex and context-dependent process where reason is related to moral considerations. Putnam claims that objectivity can be achieved in ethics. The collapse of the fact/value dichotomy implies to rethink metaphysics and normative ethics and brings forward a form of practical rationality that is set in agency, practice, and collectivity.
