Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The increasing desire for flexibility in the modern working world is fueling the development of adaptive and, in particular, digital communication solutions. But which communication formats tend to be used for specific situations in the context of everyday office life? This study examines the underlying processes of media selection in the peer-to-peer environment in organizations. The theoretical framework assumes that media choice is moderated either by rational, subjective or collective factors. This assumption is to be evaluated with the help of semi-structured interviews. The interviewees are asked for their assessment of their own media behavior based on exemplary situations. The survey is divided into three communication contexts (task-related information exchange, discussions on project tasks, informal communication). The subjective theories of media selection collected in each case are then summarized and placed in relation to each other. The results suggest that the theoretical directions of media choice research are not in competition, but rather complement each other. Particularly the influence of purpose-related and social aspects on individual media choice is classified as strong. Personal factors, on the other hand, only play a subordinate role, as these are significantly manipulated by the collective. In addition, the results show that the selection process is also influenced by the communication context. If the interaction context is classified as formal, media that are also considered formal are primarily used (online meetings, telephone, e-mails, face to face conversations). In the case of informal communication, informal media are used (online chats, cell phone text messages, face to face conversations).
