Die Masterarbeit umfasst eine zweiteilige linguistische Analyse der Mikroblogging-Kommunikation, die während der Memorial Day-Überflutungen in Texas und Oklahoma im Jahr 2015 in Echtzeit entstanden ist. Dabei übermittelten Akteur:innen semantische Informationen, welche den gegenwärtigen Kontext, in dem sie sich befanden, sowie ihre physische, ökologische und soziale Umgebung beschreiben. Methodologisch basiert diese Untersuchung auf einer Kombination von korpuslinguistischen Ansätzen sowie auf Hallidays Konzeptualisierungen der systemisch-funktionalen Linguistik und ihrer experientiellen Bedeutungen. Verben und Verbgruppen werden als Kernelemente der experientiellen Bedeutungen verstanden und stehen hierbei im Mittelpunkt. Die korpuslinguistische Analyse zielt darauf ab, die Unterschiede zwischen den Memorial Day-Überflutungen und dem allgemeinen Diskurs, in der Mikroblogging-Kommunikation von Twitter, zu schildern. Nach dieser Auswertung erfolgt die Darlegung der linguistischen Analyse der experientiellen Prozesse. Dieser Abschnitt beschäftigt sich vornehmlich mit der Frage, wie Akteur:innen Bedeutungen in formalem Sinn von Prozessen konstruieren, und verfolgt deren Dynamik über einen bestimmten Zeitraum. Die umfassende Untersuchung dieser Aspekte stellt die Grundlage für eine parallele Diskursanalyse der Kurznachrichten aus semiotischer Sicht dar, welche den zweiten Teil der Analyse bildet. Der Schwerpunkt liegt im Zuge dessen darauf zu erläutern, welche Arten von kontextbezogener Bedeutung während des festgelegten Zeitraums realisiert werden und wie sich der Diskurs um die Überflutungen im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt. Die gesamte Auswertung erfolgt im Zusammenhang mit einer zeitlichen Einordnung.

This study provides a two-part linguistic analysis of microblogged communication from the Memorial Day floods in Texas and Oklahoma in 2015, generated in near real-time. Authors of microposts share semantic information which is closely related and describes the context of the situation in which they currently are, and their physical, ecological and social environment. In order to examine this information, this thesis uses a combination of corpus linguistic approaches, Halliday’s conceptualisations of Systemic Functional Linguistics and experiential meanings conveyed by verbal groups as key functional resources. The corpus linguistic analysis aims to depict the differences between the Memorial Day floods and the general discourse, both represented in the microblogging service Twitter. This examination is followed by narrowed down linguistic analysis, adapting the experiential process system. The main focus of this part is to trace how actors construe meanings in formal terms and to follow the dynamics of encoded experiential processes throughout a selected time period in which the flooding occurred. The close investigation of experiential processes will provide the foundations and facilitate the simultaneous discourse analysis of microposts in a semiotic mode, which comprises the second part of the analysis. The main focus here is laid on explicating what kinds of contextual meaning is shared during the observed timeframe and how the discourse of the flooding develops over time. The entire set of analyses will be guided by a temporal day-by-day perspective.
