Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Meditation is gaining widespread popularity through digital applications. To these demands it is regarded as an acceptable and legitimate approach to detach meditation from its diverse religious and spiritual origins and reduce it to its techniques. It is marketed to individuals as a readily accessible self-improvement technique, apparently offering them a better understanding and regulation of the self. Entrepreneurial ethos and scientific rigorousness are thereby unquestioningly adopted from the social environment and introduced to meditation. To explore the power and knowledge structures in which meditation is embedded in the digital age, the method of a dispositive analysis was employed within the framework of a cultural-psychological research logic. It allows the examination of digital technologies within their social context as well as the political-economic circumstances that constitute and shape them. The empirical investigation is conducted using the walkthrough method, engaging in the medium throughout downloading, using, and deleting an app, allowing a performative understanding of media. The project focuses on the audio-based meditation app "Waking Up", which acknowledges challenges in the digital meditation landscape and promises to set itself apart as a positive example. As its USP, it offers advice on personal life and wealth optimization, while fostering the development of an ethical character. In addition to meditation exercises, the concept of effective altruism is introduced to the users, which involves donating money for the benefit of others. Yet, it seems to fall prey to the risk that the truth the users are meant to "awaken" to may be strongly influenced by a scientific worldview, unable to transcend the formal logic of rationality and capitalist escalation.
