Abstract
(Deutsch)
Die am häufigsten vorkommenden VLS waren „Study word with a pictorial representation of its meaning“, gefolgt von „Use the new word in a sentence“, „Use a dictionary“ und „Sing songs and repeat poems“.
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis investigates the inclusion of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) in four sets of first grade AHS coursebooks published at different points in time: English to Go 1 (2004), Red Line 1 (2008), More! 1 (2023), and Cambridge Global English 1 (2023). The analysis produced a VLS inventory comprising 38 individual VLS as well as an activity type inventory encompassing 19 different types of coursebook elements. An overall large variety of VLS and types of inclusion were identified across the four coursebook pairs. It was found that the category of Memory strategies dominates across all series, followed by Determination- and Cognitive strategies, while Metacognitive- and Social strategies are only sparsely represented. As a large variety of individual VLS could be found, a categorisation into high-, medium-, and low-frequency strategies was made. The most frequently encountered VLS were found to be Study word with a pictorial representation of its meaning, followed by Use the new word in a sentence, Use a Dictionary, and Sing songs and repeat poems. While most VLS were included implicitly within various coursebook elements, two series, English to Go 1 and Red Line 1, also introduced VLS explicitly. Although general trends could be found throughout all series, each series also showed a unique emphasis on certain VLS or activity types. A comparison between the two older generation coursebooks (English to Go 1 and Red Line 1) and the newer generation coursebooks (More! 1 and Cambridge Global English 1) showed that the older coursebooks include an overall greater variety of individual VLS and introduce several VLS explicitly, while the newer books incorporate VLS exclusively implicitly. Overall, the results indicate that while coursebooks incorporate various VLS, there are strategies that are clearly emphasised, with newer generation coursebooks showing a trend towards implicit integration and less variety compared to older series.
