Die Masterarbeit befasst sich mit einem der einnahmestärksten Filmmusicals von Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM): "Die oberen Zehntausend" (engl.: "High Society") erschien 1956 und war ein Remake von "Die Nacht vor der Hochzeit" (engl.: "The Philadelphia Story"). Die Stars des Films sind Grace Kelly und die Musikgrößen Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra und Louis Armstrong mit Band. Auf die Frage, warum ein bereits erfolgreicher Film noch einmal verfilmt wurde und was für den Erfolg dieses Remakes verantwortlich war, entstand die Hypothese, dass die Umsetzung als Filmmusical mit den von Cole Porter geschriebenen Songs in Verbindung mit den Interpret*innen und der Dramaturgie den Schlüssel zum Erfolg ausmachte. Um dies zu untersuchen, werden die Filmsongs und entsprechende Szenen mithilfe der Film-DVD und der Notenvorlagen analysiert und die Musik in Kontext mit dem szenischen und dramaturgischen Inhalt gesetzt. Dabei werden Hintergrundinformationen zur Filmentstehung, wie auch die verwendete Terminologie und Geschichte hinlänglich verwendeter musikalischer Liedformen und ihrer Formteile untersucht. Das Resümee ergibt, dass Musik und Dramaturgie sich an erprobten Konzepten orientieren, überwiegend mit Songs auf Basis der Tin Pan Alley mit der typischen Handschrift Porters, in dem auch Jazz eine zentrale Rolle spielt.

This master's thesis deals with one of the highest-grossing film musicals by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM): "High Society" was released in 1956 and was a remake of "The Philadelphia Story". The stars of the film are Grace Kelly and the musical greats Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong with band. In response to the question of why an already successful film was made into a film again and what was responsible for the success of this remake, the hypothesis arose that the realisation as a film musical with the songs written by Cole Porter in conjunction with the performers and the dramaturgy was the key to the success. In order to investigate this, the film songs and corresponding scenes are analysed with the help of the film DVD and the sheet music and the music is placed in context with the scenic and dramatic content. Background information on the making of the film, as well as the terminology used and the history of the musical song forms and their parts are examined. The conclusion is that the music and dramaturgy are based on tried and tested concepts, predominantly with songs based on Tin Pan Alley with Porter's typical signature, in which jazz also plays a central role.
