In der Wissenschaftsphilosophie und Epistemologie wird Ignoranz meist als Urzustand betrachtet, der nicht weiter erklärt werden muss. Das Feld der Agnotologie geht hingegen von der Annahme aus, dass Ignoranz oftmals durch bewusste oder unbewusste Entscheidungen produziert und verbreitet wird. Michel Foucault ist seit jeher ein wichtiger Denker für die soziale Dimension des Wissens. Gleichzeitig wird er in der agnotologischen Literatur kaum behandelt, weil er sich zwar mit der Verbindung von Macht und Wissen auseinandersetzt, das Thema Ignoranz aber weitgehend außen vorlässt. Ziel dieser Masterarbeit ist es, Foucault unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Agnotologie zu lesen und das Konzept der „Macht/Ignoranz“ parallel zu seinem Konzept von „Macht/Wissen“ zu entwickeln. Im ersten Schritt möchte ich mich mit ausgewählten Passagen von Foucault zum Thema Macht/Wissen auseinandersetzen, um aufzuzeigen, dass ihm eine tiefergehende Analyse der Ignoranz fehlt und er die Dynamik zwischen Macht und Ignoranz nicht hinreichend aufgreift. Aufgrund seiner fehlenden Diskussion der Beziehung zwischen Macht und Ignoranz werde ich das Konzept von Macht/Ignoranz einführen. In den folgenden Abschnitten werde ich mich unter dem Gesichtspunkt dieses Konzepts mit verschiedenen paradigmatischen Fallbeispielen aus der Agnotologie befassen: Ignoranz als aktives Konstrukt, als passive Wahl und als Tugend. Dadurch will ich einerseits die Foucaultsche Analyse vertiefen und andererseits die Agnotologie durch ebenjene Analyse bereichern.

In philosophy of science and epistemology, ignorance is traditionally taken to be merely a native state. By contrast, the field of agnotology treats ignorance as something that is produced and transmitted by our choices, whether deliberate or unconscious. The works of Michel Foucault, who has long been an important source for the social dimension of knowledge, are barely present in the contemporary agnotological literature. While Foucault focuses extensively on the connection between power and knowledge, he does not give ignorance its due. The aim of this thesis is twofold: First, to read Foucault under an agnotological framework and develop the concept of “power/ignorance” in analogy to his concept of “power/knowledge”. Second, to apply this concept in agnotological case studies and to show that Foucauldian thought sheds new light on the role of ignorance in society. As a first step, I will discuss selected passages by Foucault to demonstrate that he lacks a sophisticated analysis of ignorance and the dynamics between power and ignorance. Based on this, I develop the concept of power/ignorance parallel to his concept of power/knowledge. In the following sections, I will discuss the concept of power/ignorance considering several paradigm cases in the agnotological literature: Actively constructed ignorance, selectively chosen ignorance, and virtuous ignorance. By doing so, I want to deepen the Foucauldian analysis and provide contemporary agnotology with a useful concept.
