Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Autism spectrum disorder is a clinical condition associated with social impairments. The social motivation hypothesis of autism assumes these deficits to develop as a consequence of a lack of social motivation. The neuropeptide oxytocin has been shown to modulate social behaviour, while the opioid antagonist naltrexone has been shown to interact with the oxytocinergic system. The present study investigates the combined effect of oxytocin and naltrexone on social motivation in both autistic and healthy subjects. A socially reinforced learning task is used to monitor changes in social motivation under the effect of the drugs. Computational reinforcement learning modelling is used to analyse the data on a trial-by-trial basis. The analysis of the generated models shows no significant main effects, implying that oxytocin and naltrexone have no effect on social motivation. Several reasons for these results are discussed, pointing towards the trial data as the weakest point of the present design.
