Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The central topic of the master’s thesis is a comparative analysis of discourse-defining self-representations and perceptions of others of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, with a focus on their late work. The analysis is inspired by the concept of symbolic masks, which makes particularly sense in this context, since it is not possible for outsiders to say with certainty whether and to what extent these public faces also depict the real person – if there is such a person at all. Since artists usually not only put on masks for the public in order to create a certain image, but also get masks put on by the public in return, the analysis follows both a production-oriented and a reception-oriented approach. The analysis is designed as a typological comparison, which is why possible insights from influence research in the sense of a genetic comparison between the works of Dylan and Cohen are not sought or taken into account. The focus on the late work of both artists is a useful limitation, because some interesting parallels can be discerned between Dylan and Cohen in their late creative phase, which have so far been neglected in comparison to earlier career phases in research. Due to the popularity of the two artists which spans over the last 60 years, there is already a wealth of both popular and scholarly literature on their life and work, but a comparative analysis of their multifaceted late work is an enriching addition to existing research. In the context of this thesis, the late work of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen is to be understood as a vivid example of popular cultural mythization and is examined on the basis of selected sources and secondary literature. As a theoretical basis for the analysis, key aspects of myth and popular culture are presented and then discussed with reference to Dylan and Cohen. The analysis itself is divided into three overarching parts: sacred, profane, and mediatorial masks. The first part focuses on religious, spiritual and mystical self-representations and perceptions of others, the second part on socio-cultural ones. Finally, the third part analyses artistic aspects that are in the field of tension between the other two parts, which is why this part also emphasizes the mediatorial character of art in general. It illustrates in an exemplary way how art functions as a mediating instance between sacred and profane elements.
