Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
In this thesis, I the defend the claim that Marx’labour theory of value (LTV) is not a useful tool to explain distribution. Two distributive interpretations of the LTV are criticised. Firstly, there is the price-theoretical interpretation according to which the prices of commodities are determined by their labour values. While labour time is an important factor of pricedetermination, an exclusive focus on labour is insufficient. Secondly, there is the interpretation according to which the LTV should be mainly regarded as an explication of capitalist exploitation. While Marxist theory in general and the LTV specifically do provide insights into the phenomenon of exploitation, the LTV cannot fully account for the distribution of commodities among the classes of society. However, there are promising alternative, nondistributional interpretations of the LTV. In particular, it allowed Marx to clearly present his theory of capitalist profit. Furthermore, the LTV sheds light on the intricate dynamics of capitalist societies.
