Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Urbanization is rapidly expanding, with more than two-thirds of the global population forecasted to live in cities by 2050. Although urban living provides many health benefits, it is also related to increased psychological and physiological risks, such as the development of psychiatric disorders, i.e. due to heightened social stress. At the same time, exposure to nature has been suggested to promote mental health and well-being, indicating that the development of natural spaces in urban areas might alleviate some of the negative effects of urbanization. However, it is currently unclear which type of nature (green space, blue space) creates most benefits. This research explores the influence of a one-hour walk in different natural environments on working memory performance and self-reported rumination levels in adults in Berlin. Participants (n=99) were randomly allocated to one of the three conditions: open green space, covered green space, blue space. In contrast to our hypotheses, no difference in the effects of these types of environments on working memory and rumination could be identified, suggesting that the type of nature may not be that decisive. Nevertheless, this study contributes to the field of environmental psychology and neuroscience, by being among the first ones to experimentally investigate the effects of exposure to different natural environments on cognitive and affective phenomena. Thus, this research highlights the importance of incorporating natural areas into urban planning and policies to target mental health challenges intensified by urban stressors.
