In dieser Masterarbeit wird der Zusammenhang zwischen sozialen Bewegungen und Musik untersucht, welche als nachhaltiges soziales und kulturelles Phänomen, sowie als friedliches Mittel zum Protest und Empowerment, als auch Förderungsmittel von sozialem Wandel angesehen wird. Die folgende Arbeit ist eine Fallstudie, die sich mit zwei bedeutenden Schwarzen Künstlerinnen befasst, welche im Kontext von zwei der wichtigsten sozialen Bewegungen des 20. Jahrhunderts ihre Stimmen erhoben: Zum einen die US-Amerikanerin Nina Simone, die eine prominente Gestalt innerhalb der Bürgerrechtsbewegung in den Vereinigten Staaten war, und zum anderen die Südafrikanerin Miriam Makeba, die aus dem Exil eine wichtige Rolle als Aktivistin gegen das Apartheid-Regime in Südafrika spielte. Beide Musikerinnen trugen auf vielfältige und bedeutsame Weise zur jeweiligen sozialen Bewegung bei. Dies geschah insbesondere durch Songs, in denen sie den Kampf gegen Rassenungleichheit in ihrem jeweiligen Heimatland thematisierten, wodurch ihre Handlungsräume, in diesem Fall ihr politisches Engagement und ihre Musik, verschmolzen. Mit dieser Masterarbeit soll gezeigt werden, dass ihr Aktivismus innerhalb dieser sozialen Bewegungen ihre Karrieren, ihre Musik sowie ihre Privatleben und die politische Rolle von Künstlerinnen ambivalent beeinflusste. Das Ziel ist hierbei, die verflochtene Geschichte von sozialen Bewegungen und Musik in Verbindung mit der anhaltenden Problematik geschlechtsspezifischer Diskriminierung gegenüber Frauen und Rassismus auf einer nationalen, sowie internationalen Ebene zu präsentieren.

This master's thesis analyses the connection between social movements and music as a social and cultural phenomenon with a lasting impact as a non-violent protest tool, a means of empowerment, and facilitator of social change. The following text is a case study of two influential Black female artists who “raised their voices” within the context of two of the most important social movements of the 20th century: On the one hand the American Nina Simone, a prominent figure within the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and on the other hand the South African Miriam Makeba, who played an important role as an exiled activist against the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Both musicians contributed to the respective movements in various impactful ways, particularly through songs that thematised the struggles of racial inequality in their home countries through which their fields of action, i.e. political engagement and music, were fused. This paper seeks to demonstrate that their activism within these movements had an ambivalent influence on their careers, their music and their personal lives, as well as on the political role of female artists. It aims to showcase the interwoven history of social movements and music in connection to the ever-present continuous problem of gender bias and racism on a national and international scale.
