Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Verständnis von Care in einem Pflegeheim in Wien. Anhand von teilnehmenden Beobachtungen und vereinzelten Interviews habe ich mich auf drei Bereiche gestützt: die Angehörigen, PflegerInnen und eine Besucherin des Vereins Jung und Alt. Hierbei fokussierte ich mich auf die Art, wie Care-Praktiken mit den BewohnerInnen des Pflegeheims verhandelt werden. Dabei geht es hierbei insbesondere darum, dass das, was ein/e BewohnerIn möchte, nicht immer mit den Wünschen der Pflegekräfte übereinstimmt. Basierend auf den Leitbildern, die im Konzept des Pflegeheims verfasst sind, untersuche ich insbesondere die Bereiche Ernährung, Sicherheit, Körperpflege und Freizeit. Ich analysiere dabei, welche Werte hinter “Ich esse und trinke mit Genuss”, “Ich will mich körperlich wohlfühlen” etc. stecken. Und gleichzeitig beleuchte ich, wie diese in der Realität umgesetzt werden und welche Wünsche und BewohnerInnen von diesem Leitbild ausgeschlossen werden. Ich stelle mir dabei unter anderem die Frage, wo die Grenzen zwischen Kontrolle und Care liegen und ob es zwei voneinander getrennte Praktiken sind oder sie doch zusammengehören. Weiters versuche ich mit der Theorie des Willens aus einem anthropologischen Verständnis heraus zu zeigen, wie der Wille kulturell geprägt ist, der wiederum hinter den (gegensätzlichen) Wünschen von BewohnerInnen und ihren InterakteurInnen eines Pflegeheims steckt.

This Master thesis concerns the understanding of care within a nursing home in Austria. Based on participant observations and a few interviews I focused on three areas: relatives, care-workers and a visitor from the association Jung und Alt. In the center of this elaborations stands the care-practices and the negotiations between the residents and their interactors within the nursing home. I am starting with the aim to depict that the wants of the residents do not always correspond with the wants of the care workers, relatives or visitors. On the base of different guiding principles in concepts of Austrian nursing homes I am exploring the areas of nutrition, security, hygiene and leisure time. I am analyzing what stands behind claims like “I eat and drink with pleasure” or “I feel physically well”. At the same time, I shed light on how these are implemented, and which wishes and residents are excluded from this model. I am posing the question of where the boundaries lie between control and care, and I am trying to find out if those are two separate practices or if they align after all. Furthermore, I use the theory of the will from an anthropological understanding to show how the will is culturally shaped, which in turn shapes the (contradictory) wishes of residents and the people involved in a care home.
