Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

With the end of the Cold War and the transformation that came along with it, hopes for a strengthened world order of peaceful coexistence grew. Based on this euphoric context the UN Secretary General Boutros-Boutros Ghali focused his efforts on restating the United Nations as an influential representative of peace. At the same time he intended to raise the profile of the UN Secretary General while facing new problems that had been challenging the international community. In this context all interest was again focused on Dag Hammarskjöld. The Swedish incumbent who died in an unexplained plane crash in Ndola is until today regarded as the authority all other successors are measured against. Within the power constellation of the Cold War he, like no other incumbent before or after him, succeeded in constituting the UN as a potent representative of peace and in deepening the political competencies of this function. Especially in times of financial and climate crisis, where problems exceed the solution capacity of even powerful states, this thesis aims at giving a coherent analysis of Dag Hammarskjöld’s period as UN Secretary General and at the same time focuses on the specific factors responsible for his success or failure. Thus, this thesis shall contribute to finding a scientific solution that clears the specific possibilities, restrictions and competencies inherent in his position. Furthermore, it should be demonstrated how fundamentally the UN Secretary General can contribute to establish international peace.
