Diese Arbeit untersucht das Zusammenspiel staatlicher und privater Macht in der Rohstoffindustrie, die wohl die Grundlage für die globale politische Ökonomie des 20. Jahrhunderts bildet: Öl. Durch eine Analyse der sich gegenseitig bedingenden, kooperativen und widersprüchlichen Beziehung zwischen der Royal Dutch Shell Group und dem venezolanischen Staat im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts untersucht sie die Entwicklung des venezolanischen Ölsektors von die ersten Konzessionsvergaben bis zu seiner Konsolidierung als globale Kraft und der Verstaatlichung im Jahr 1976. Wie wurde in jeder Phase der Entwicklung der Industrie Wert geschaffen und zwischen Shell und dem venezolanischen Staat aufgeteilt, wie wurde er angefochten und in welcher Weise hat er sich verschoben? Anhand einer Vielzahl von Primärquellen aus nationalen und Unternehmensarchiven zeichnet diese Arbeit die nationalen und globalen Konturen dieser Fragen nach.

This thesis explores the interplay of state and private power in the commodity industry which is arguably most foundational to the global political economy of the twentieth century: oil. Through an analysis of the mutually-constituting, cooperating, and conflicting relationship of the Royal Dutch Shell Group and the Venezuelan state over the course of the 20th century, it examines the development of Venezuela’s oil sector from initial concession grants to its consolidation as a global force and 1976 nationalization. Across each period of the industry’s development, how was value created and shared between Shell and the Venezuelan state, how was it contested, and in what ways did it shift? Using a variety of primary sources from national and company archives, this thesis traces the domestic and global contours of these questions.
