Die vorliegende Masterarbeit erforscht die Verflechtung von Fotografie und Kolonialismus anhand der fotografischen Sammlung S.M.S. Aurora des Weltmuseum Wien. Im Fokus stehen dabei die ideologischen Voraussetzungen, die die Sammlung von Fotografien auf der Reise der Korvette Aurora von 1886 bis 1888 beeinflussten, sowie deren Reflexion in der Produktion, Darstellung, Zirkulation und Rezeption der Bilder. Der erste Teil der Arbeit beleuchtet die historischen und institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen die k.u.k. Kriegsmarine die Fotografien für das k.k. Naturhistorische Hofmuseum „sammelte“. Im zweiten Teil wird eine detaillierte Analyse der in Singapur erworbenen Fotografien durchgeführt, wobei insbesondere die Kategorien der „Typen“- und Herrschaftsfotografien untersucht werden. Die Forschung verdeutlicht die Rezeption der Bilder in verschiedenen kulturellen und geographischen Kontexten sowie die Auswirkungen auf die Darstellung der abgebildeten Personen im „kolonialen Kontext“. Einerseits werden koloniale Machtdynamiken verstärkt, wie etwa die Konstruktion „des Anderen“ und die „Exotisierung“ nicht-westlicher Kulturen. Zugleich unterstreichen die Fotografien die Handlungsmacht sogenannter marginalisierter Akteur:innen, die aktiv zur Formung und Verbreitung visueller Kultur beitrugen und etablierte Narrative herausforderten und modifizierten. Für zukünftige Forschungsprojekte ist der Austausch mit Interessensvertreter:innen aus den Herkunftsregionen der Fotografien erforderlich, um über die reine Bildbetrachtung hinauszugehen und Erkenntnisse über die Bedeutung und die Verwendung der Fotografien in historischen und gegenwärtigen Diskursen einzubringen.

This master's thesis explores the interplay between photography and colonialism through the photographic collection of the S.M.S. Aurora at the Weltmuseum Wien. The research focuses on the ideological conditions that underlay the collection of photographs during the voyage of His Majesty’s Ship Aurora from 1886 to 1888, as well as their manifestation in the production, representation, circulation, and reception of the images. The first part of the thesis is an examination of historical and institutional conditions under which the Austro-Hungarian Navy collected photographs for the Imperial Natural History Museum. The second part is a detailed analysis of the photographs acquired in Singapore, focusing particularly on photographs of „types” and sovereigns. The research highlights the reception of these images in various cultural and geographical contexts and their effects on the representation of the depicted individuals as well as the perception of the colonial enterprise. On one hand, we see the intensification of colonial power dynamics, such as the construction of „the Other” and the exoticization of non-Western cultures. At the same time, the photographs underscore the agency of so-called marginalized actors who actively contributed to the formation and dissemination of visual culture, challenging and modifying established narratives. Future research projects require engagement with representatives the communities of origin to extend beyond mere visual analysis and incorporate insights of the significance and use of the photographs in historical and contemporary discourses.
