Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Power is an omnipresent phenomenon in all social systems and relationships; human co-operation is not possible without power. Nevertheless, the term has strong negative connotations. This is one of the reasons why many supervisors tend to define themselves as abstinent from power in their work in organisations, although power inevitably shapes their work and they could not be effective without it. The aim of this study is to analyse the topic of power in the context of team supervision. The work is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part: the former examines fundamental concepts of power and their relevance in organisational structures and specifically in supervision. Here, terms such as micro-politics, leadership, formal and informal power, as well as the challenges associated with power discourses and dynamics are discussed. Interviews with experienced supervisors, who provide insights into their practical experiences and the power phenomena they perceive, form the starting point of the empirical part. This qualitative data is analysed and discussed in a structured category system. In doing so, questions will be asked about the localisation of power, the effective assumptions and attitudes of supervisors with regard to power, the sources and limits of supervisory power as well as supervisory strategies for dealing with the phenomenon in the team setting.
