Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This research explored the impact of message phrasing on psychological reactance by examining whether high-controlling and low-controlling messages aimed at reducing meat consumption differ significantly from each other and a control group. Additionally, the moderating role of compassionate goals in this relationship was assessed. In an online survey (N = 396), participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups, reading either a high-controlling, low-controlling, or a neutral message. The results showed that high-controlling language elicited higher levels of psychological reactance than both low-controlling language and the control group. Moreover, a moderation analysis confirmed the mitigating effect of compassionate goals in the context of high-controlling messages. Specifically, individuals with higher levels of compassionate goals were less affected by high-controlling messages than those with lower levels of compassionate goals. These findings highlight the importance of message design in effectively communicating restrictive messages. Keywords: message phrasing, high-controlling, low-controlling, psychological reactance, compassionate goals
