Diese Arbeit untersucht die Rolle des Protestliedes „Baraye“ von Shervin Hajipour für die Thematisierung und Rahmung der „Woman, Life, Freedom“-Bewegung 2022 und die Herausbildung einer feministischen Gegenöffentlichkeit auf YouTube. Mithilfe einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse der YouTube-Kommentare wird untersucht, ob und wie Rezipient:innen diagnostische, prognostische und motivationale Frames formulieren und ob und wie sie eine feministische Gegenöffentlichkeit in den Kommentaren herausbilden. Theoretisch basiert die Untersuchung auf der Framing-Theorie der sozialen Bewegungsforschung von Snow und Benford (1988, 2000) sowie Nancy Frasers (1990) Konzept der „subalternen Gegenöffentlichkeiten“. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass primär bewegungsbezogene Themen sowie das Protestlied selbst in den Kommentaren umfassend thematisiert werden. Diagnostische Frames fokussieren auf die mangelnde Freiheit als zentrales Problem, verbunden mit Kritik am Regime, an der Theokratie und an der Unterdrückung von Frauen. Prognostische Frames betonen das politische Potenzial von „Baraye“, Protest und Revolution als Maßnahmen, und fordern sowohl individuelle als auch internationale Unterstützung und feministische Solidarität. Motivationale Frames rufen zu Befreiung und Widerstand gegen das Regime sowie zur aktiven Beteiligung auf und enthalten Solidaritätsbekundungen mit Shervin Hajipour und iranischen Frauen. Eine feministische Gegenöffentlichkeit manifestiert sich besonders in Solidaritätsbekundungen mit Mahsa Amini, im feministischen Leitsatz „Frauen, Leben, Freiheit“ in der Betonung der entscheidenden Rolle der Iranerinnen sowie in der Ablehnung patriarchaler Repression. Die Untersuchung zeigt, wie „Baraye“ alternative feministische Diskurse auf YouTube ermöglicht und zur Rahmung zentraler Themen der Bewegung beiträgt.

This study examines the role of the protest song “Baraye” by Shervin Hajipour in framing the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement of 2022 and in shaping a feminist counterpublic on YouTube. Using a qualitative content analysis of YouTube comments, it investigates whether and how commenters formulate diagnostic, prognostic, and motivational frames and whether and how a feminist counterpublic emerges in these comments. The study is theoretically grounded in Snow and Benford’s (1988, 2000) framing theory of social movement research and Nancy Fraser’s (1990) concept of “subaltern counterpublics.” The findings reveal that movement-related themes and the protest song itself are prominently framed in the comments. Diagnostic frames focus on the lack of freedom as a central issue, coupled with criticism of the regime, theocracy, and the oppression of women. Prognostic frames emphasize the political potential of “Baraye,” protest and revolution as strategies, and call for both individual and international support and feminist solidarity. Motivational frames encourage liberation and resistance against the regime, as well as active participation, and include expressions of solidarity with Shervin Hajipour and Iranian women. A feminist counterpublic is particularly evident in expressions of solidarity with Mahsa Amini, in the feminist slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom,” in the emphasis on the critical role of Iranian women, and in the rejection of patriarchal oppression. This study highlights how “Baraye” fosters alternative feminist discourses on YouTube and contributes to framing key themes of the movement.
