Diese Arbeit untersucht die Beziehung zwischen Demokratie, Medien und Identität im Kontext klassischer Medientheorie anhand zweier ausgewählter Videoinstallationen von Candice Breitz. Im Fokus steht Breitz‘ dekonstruktive Auseinandersetzung mit mediengeprägten Dynamiken und Machtstrukturen, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die hybride Verschmelzung persönlicher und öffentlicher Narrative. Anhand der Werke wird analysiert, wie mediale Performanz Formen neuer Vergemeinschaftung hervorbringt, andererseits jedoch Mechanismen der Vereinzelung und Konkurrenz reproduziert. Die Untersuchung greift auf theoretische Konzepte wie Joshua Meyrowitz‘ Unterscheidung zwischen „Onstage“ und „Backstage“ zurück, um aufzuzeigen, wie Breitz stereotype Vorstellungen dekonstruiert und demokratische Werte wie Gleichheit und Gemeinschaft kritisch hinterfragt. Die Arbeit verdeutlicht, wie ihre Werke neue Perspektiven auf soziale Gerechtigkeit und Inklusion eröffnen, und wie das Kunstdispositiv zu einem vertieften Verständnis der Funktionsweisen von Popkultur und zur Medienkompetenz beitragen kann.

This paper examines the relationship between democracy, media, and identity in the context of classical media theory through the analysis of two selected video installations by Candice Breitz. The focus is on Breitz’s deconstructive engagement with media-driven dynamics and power structures, particularly regarding the hybrid merging of personal and public narratives. Her works are analyzed to reveal how media performance fosters new forms of community while simultaneously perpetuating mechanisms of isolation and competition. The study draws on theoretical concepts such as Joshua Meyrowitz’s distinction between “onstage” and “backstage” to demonstrate how Breitz deconstructs stereotypical notions and critically interrogates democratic values such as equality and community. The paper highlights how her multimedia installations provide new perspectives on social justice and inclusion, and how the artistic dispositif contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of pop culture and the development of media literacy.
