Die Transformationen des philippinischen Archipels, insbesondere Modernisierungsprojekte, haben jüngst an Bedeutung gewonnen in der spanischen und philippinischen Historiographie des 19. Jahrhunderts. Globalhistoriker*innen zielen durch die Erforschung von Epidemien, Modernisierung und Öffentlichkeiten auf eine Integration der Städtegeschichte ins Feld der Globalgeschichte ab. Diese Masterarbeit behandelt die koloniale Hafenstadt von Manila während des Cholera-Ausbruchs von 1882 und fragt nach dem Einfluss von Manilas Position als asiatische koloniale Hafenstadt in den Repräsentationen der Tageszeitung La Oceanía Española. Manila wurde als eine hybride Stadt zwischen Tradition und Modernität dargestellt. Dadurch wurde die koloniale Präsenz Spaniens legitimiert. Während moderne Ideale hervorgehoben wurden, verschleierte die Zeitung Akteur*innen und Praktiken, die mit diesen Idealen nicht zusammenpassten. Manilas dezentrale Perspektive trägt zu einem besseren Verständnis von imperialer Lokalität.

Recently, scholarship on the nineteenth-century Spanish Empire and Philippine history has illuminated the changes in the Philippine Archipelago, with recent studies focusing on modernization projects. From the field of Global History, studies on epidemics, modernisation, and publics have been aimed at integrating perspectives from urban history. Building on this, the thesis approaches the city of Manila during the cholera epidemic of 1882, asking how the city’s position as an Asian colonial port city determined the city’s representations during the epidemic and the development of a specific cityscape in the daily newspaper La Oceanía Española. I argue that Manila was represented as a hybrid space between idealized modernity and Asian tradition, legitimizing the Spanish colonial presence and the order imposed by it, highlighting ideals of modernity, while marginalizing and concealing actors and practices that did not fit into the essentialized imagination of the city. The case of Manila contributes to a better understanding of the locality of empire, especially by offering a decentral perspective.
