Die Arbeit vergleicht die formellen und narrativen Methoden mit deren Hilfe dystopische und Southern Gothic Texte soziale Kritik äußern, wobei besonderer Fokus auf US-amerikanischer Literatur liegt. Nach der Definition beider Gattungen konzentriert sich die Analyse in ihrem Vergleich auf sowohl sekundäre als auch primäre Texte und ist in zwei Teile geteilt: 1) Formale Aspekte wie narrative Struktur und 2) von beiden Genres behandelte Schlüsselthemen. Beide Teile heben soziale Kritik als roten Faden innerhalb der Primärtexte hervor und zeigen die ähnliche Herangehensweise beider Gattungen an diese. Das Ergebnis weist eindeutig darauf hin, dass Southern Gothic Texte auf sehr ähnliche Weise mit sozialer Kritik umgehen wie Werke der dystopischen Fiktion, was eine Re-kontextualisierung beider Literaturen mithilfe von Gattungstheorie ermöglicht und schlussendlich die Schwächen der Genre-Kategorisierung hervorhebt.

The thesis aims to compare the formal and narrative ways in which Dystopian and Southern Gothic texts employ social critique, with special focus on US American literature. After defining both genres, the analysis concentrates on both secondary and primary texts in its comparison and is split in two parts: 1) Formal aspects, such as narrative composition and 2) key themes explored in both genres. Both parts highlight the common theme of social criticism across the primary literature discussed and show the similar approaches the two genres take. The result indicates clearly that Southern Gothic texts engage in social criticism very similarly to works of Dystopian fiction, which allows for a re-contextualization of the two literatures through genre theory and ultimately highlights the weaknesses of genre categorization.
