Gun Island (2019) von Amitav Ghosh und Scattered All Over the Earth (2018/2022) von Yoko Tawada können als Wassertexte bezeichnet werden, also Romane, die über, mit und durch das Wasser erzählen. Mit den Blue Humanities und dem Material Ecocriticism als theoretischem Unterbau kann das Wasser nicht nur als Hintergrund, Metapher oder Setting, sondern als Protagonist gelesen werden, der eine narrative Eloquenz in sich trägt und auf die Geschichtsträchtigkeit aller – auch unbelebter – Materie verweist. Bei genauerer Betrachtung wirkt das Wasser auf die formelle, sprachliche und erzählerische Ebene und erweitert dabei das Erzählen in Zeiten des Anthropozän und der Klimakrise um nicht-menschliche Dimensionen. Dies führt dazu, dass alternative Interpretationen zum Endzeitnarrativ um Apokalypse und Untergang gefunden werden können, und ein hoffnungsvolles Schreiben und Lesen möglich wird, das Verantwortung zu übernehmen versucht für die Folgen eines politischen, gesellschaftlich-kulturellen Anthropozentrismus. Wasser als das Element der Regeneration und Transformation, der Sättigung und der Über-Setzung bietet in seinem ästhetischen Potential dabei neue Wahrnehmungen der Welt an, von denen einige anhand von Gun Island und Scattered All Over the Earth lesbar werden.

Gun Island (2019) by Amitav Ghosh and Scattered All Over the Earth (2018/2022) by Yoko Tawada can be described as water texts, novels which narrate of, with and through water. With the Blue Humanities and Material Ecocriticism as theoretical foundation, water can be read not only as a background, metaphor or setting, but as a protagonist, carrying narrative eloquence and pointing towards the storied potential of – also inanimate – matter. On closer inspection, water acts on the formal, linguistic and narrative level and adds non-human dimensions to an understanding of narrating in times of the Anthropocene and the climate crisis. This leads to alternative interpretations to the narrative of apocalypse and demise and makes possible a hopeful writing and reading that seeks to take responsibility for the consequences of a political, socio-cultural anthropocentrism. In its esthetic potential, water as the element of regeneration and transformation, of saturation and translation/transition, offers new perceptions of our world, some of which become readable in Gun Island and Scattered All Over the Earth.
