Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The COVID pandemic in 2020 had a great impact on the European economy and the overall banking system. Banks had to react to the increased market uncertainty by adjusting their risk management. This thesis investigates how European banks adjusted their liquidity holdings in this context. Using data from the years 2015 to 2023 from a sample of banks supervised by the European Central Bank, this thesis analyses trends, structural breaks, and key drivers of liquidity changes. The, with Basel III implemented ratios, Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) and Net Stable Fund-ing Ratio (NSFR) are used to determine the liquidity. For the analysis, the thesis splits the collected data into three phases, a pre-, during, and after-COVID phase and compares the banks' liquidity positions over time. The results of the thesis proves that the banks increased their liquidity buffers during the pandemic. It also explains the influence of bank size, stability, economic conditions, and profitability on the two liquidity ratios. The findings show that larger banks were slightly better positioned to maintain high liquidity ratios. By delivering these results, the thesis contributes to the ongoing research on financial stability, liquidity management, and regulatory effectiveness.
