Abstract

Glassy dynamics of binary mixtures are usually studied using hard spheres of different sizes or other generic interaction potentials. However, more complex binary mixtures, such as mixtures where one component is soft and the other is hard, remain largely unexplored. This thesis presents results from extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a glass formed by large soft colloids to which smaller hard colloids are added. We characterize the structure and dynamics of both components, successfully reproducing experimental observation where the glass melts upon increasing hard colloid concentration. Our analysis specifically focuses on the dynamics of the hard spheres within the glassy matrix of soft colloids. We demonstrate that the onset of phase separation non-trivially influences the dynamics of the hard colloids. Namely, upon increasing phase separation, we identify two distinct dynamic regimes of the hard spheres: A fast regime associated with phase separated clusters of hard spheres, and a slow regime occurring when the hard colloids are diffusing through the glassy matrix. Furthermore, we observe remarkable decoupling between self and collective dynamics, as described by the intermediate scattering functions, at the characteristic length scales of the phase separated clusters. Self dynamics decay conventionally in an exponential manner, while the collective intermediate scattering functions develop a pronounced rising plateau as phase separation advances. Notably, the timescale of total relaxation of the self and collective intermediate scattering functions stay constant even as the plateau rise. These findings demonstrate that to fully describe the anomalous dynamics of the hard colloids in the presence of phase separation, collective dynamics must be considered. In this thesis we therefore reveal that phase separation in a glassy environment leads to novel dynamic effects not present in homogeneous systems.
