Diese Arbeit untersucht, wie die resistance identity in den politischen Diskursen der Freiheitlichen Partei Österreichs (FPÖ) über zwei Zeiträume hinweg verhandelt wird: zum einen in dem Zeitraum, in welchem Jörg Haider eine der zentralen Figuren der Partei war (1989–2005), und zum anderen in der aktuellen Phase der FPÖ-Identitätsverhandlung (Januar–April 2025). Aufbauend auf Manuel Castells’ Theorie der resistance identity und Andreas Hepps Theorie transkultureller Kommunikation analysiert die Arbeit, wie unterschiedliche rechtspopulistische Diskurselemente auf lokaler, österreichischer Ebene von FPÖ-Akteur:innen in der entsprechenden resistance identity verhandelt und eingebettet werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurde eine qualitative Diskursanalyse durchgeführt, in deren Rahmen Reden, Interviews und Social-Media-Beiträge ausgewertet wurden, um Kontinuitäten sowie Veränderungen in der resistance identity Verhandlung über den entsprechenden Zeitraum hinweg nachvollziehbar zu machen. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse verweisen auf eine doppelte Dynamik: Während bestimmte Elemente über beide Zeiträume hinweg weitgehend bestehen blieben, wurden andere adaptiert oder sind aus dem Diskurs verschwunden. Der Vergleich mit transkulturellen rechtspopulistischen Diskursen zeigte zudem, dass gewisse Elemente nahezu unverändert übernommen wurden, andere hingegen nur marginal bzw. kontextabhängig adaptiert wurden – und damit auf eine österreich-spezifische Verhandlung der resistance identity hindeutet. Letztlich lässt sich die aktuelle Identitätsverhandlung der FPÖ zwischen einer resistance identity – geprägt durch eine explizit oppositionelle Selbstverortung – und einer project identity verorten, die auf eine grundlegende Umgestaltung gesellschaftlicher Strukturen abzielt. Diese Perspektive deutet auf die doppelte Rolle der Partei hin, indem sie zum einen als Widerstandskraft gegen das politische Establishment fungiert und zugleich integraler Bestandteil eben dieses Establishments ist.

This thesis investigates how resistance identity is negotiated within the political discourse of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) across two periods: the era in which Jörg Haider was a central figure in the party (1989–2005), and the current phase of resistance identity negotiation (January–April 2025). Drawing on Manuel Castells’ concept of resistance identity and Andreas Hepp’s theory of transcultural communication, the thesis explores how far-right discursive elements are locally appropriated, reinterpreted, and embedded in Austria’s negotiation of resistance identity. To this end, a qualitative discourse analysis was conducted, by examining speeches, interviews, and social media posts in order to trace both continuities and shifts in the FPÖ’s resistance identity negotiation over time. The findings of the analysis point to a dual dynamic: while certain elements remained largely stable over the discourses, others have been renegotiated or have disappeared. The comparison with broader transcultural far-right discourses revealed that some elements are implemented with minimal alteration, while others are contextually adapted to reflect the Austrian-specific renegotiation of resistance identity. Ultimately, the FPÖ’s current identity negotiation can be situated between a resistance identity – characterized by an explicitly oppositional self-positioning – and a project identity that seeks to reshape Austria’s broader social structures. This perspective underscores the party’s dual role as both resister of and participant within the very political mainstream.
