Diese Arbeit untersucht die Transformation der Uhr als kulturelles Zeichen in Tōkyō monogatari (Ozu Yasujirō) und Café Lumière (Hou Hsiao-Hsien) als Spiegel des sozio-historischen Wandels zwischen Japan und Taiwan. Ausgehend von Kristevas Methode der Intertextualität werden Events beider Filme auf Bild-, Sprach- und Objektebene beschrieben. Die Uhr wandelt sich vom familiären Geschenk zum autonomen Kunstobjekt und spiegelt einen Wandel von Zeit, Subjektivität und transnationaler Kulturproduktion im transnationalen Film Japans. In Hous Bearbeitung wird das Zeichen enthierarchisiert und in horizontale Machtverhältnisse in der Filmsprache überführt.

This thesis examines the transformation of the clock as a cultural sign in Tōkyō monogatari (Ozu Yasujirō) and Café Lumière (Hou Hsiao-Hsien) as a reflection of the socio-historical change between Japan and Taiwan. Based on Kristeva’s method of intertextuality, events from both films are described on the levels of image, language, and object. The clock shifts from a familial gift to an autonomous work of art and reflects a transformation of time, subjectivity, and transnational cultural production in Japan’s transnational cinema. In Hou’s treatment, the sign is de-hierarchized and transferred into horizontal power relations within cinematic language.
