Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika blicken auf eine lange Geschichte des neoliberalen Kapitalismus zurück, einem sozioökonomischen System, welches unter anderem Privatisierung, Individualismus, den Abbau von wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Leistungen, sowie die Kommodifizierung nahezu aller Lebensbereiche in den Vordergrund stellt. Die vorliegende Arbeit vertritt die These, dass Eskapismus unter diesen gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen sowohl als notwendige psychologische Reaktion auf die Anforderungen und Belastungen des neoliberalen Kapitalismus entsteht als auch als wirksames Mittel dient, um individuelle Produktivität und Profiterzeugung aufrechtzuerhalten. Anhand der Analyse des Romans My Year of Rest and Relaxation von Ottessa Moshfegh, der im kapitalistisch-neoliberalen Amerika der frühen 2000er Jahre verortet ist, wird aufgezeigt, inwiefern der Text eine bedeutende und kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den sozialen Gegebenheiten dieser Epoche darstellt und wie diese Gegebenheiten Eskapismus als Bewältigungsstrategie notwendig machen. Nach der Darlegung des theoretischen Hintergrunds zur neoliberalen Gesellschaft in den USA sowie zur Begrifflichkeit des Eskapismus widmet sich der zweite Teil der Arbeit einer Close Reading Analyse des Romans. Dabei werden marxistische und feministische literaturwissenschaftliche Ansätze herangezogen, um die Darstellung von Kapitalismus, Wettbewerb, Klassismus, Entfremdung, Arbeitsethos sowie Geschlechterrollen und Geschlechtererwartungen kritisch zu beleuchten und aufzuzeigen, wie neoliberale Wertvorstellungen den Rückzug der Erzählerin/Protagonistin in Schlaf und Isolation beeinflussen.

The United States has a long history with neoliberal capitalism, a socio-economic system which prioritizes, amongst others, privatization, individualism, reduction of welfare, and commodification of nearly all aspects of life. This thesis argues and presents that, under such conditions, escapism emerges both as a necessary psychological reaction to the stressful demands and hardships of neoliberal capitalism as well as an efficient method for sustaining individual productivity and profit-generation. By analyzing Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation, set in early 2000s capitalist-neoliberal America, this thesis aims to illustrate how the text is a significant and critical representation of the social conditions of capitalist-neoliberal America and how these conditions require escapism as a coping method. After outlining the theoretical background of capitalist-neoliberal American society in the early 2000s as well as the concept of escapism, the second part of this thesis presents the close reading analysis of the novel My Year of Rest and Relaxation written by Ottessa Moshfegh. For this part the methods of Marxist and feminist literary analysis were adopted to critically investigate the roles of capitalism, competition, classism, alienation, work ethics, as well as gender roles and expectations in the novel to demonstrate how capitalist-neoliberal values influence the narrator-protagonist’s escape into sleep.
