Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) have been found to exist in the centres of most galaxies. With masses in the range of 10⁵ −10¹⁰ M⊙ their gravitational potential is significant, yet it extends only over the innermost region of the galaxy. Despite this, there exist several empirical correlations between SMBHs and various properties of their host galaxies that extend well beyond the SMBH’s sphere of influence, thereby suggesting some form of co-evolution. The strongest of these is the scaling relation between the SMBH mass and effective stellar velocity M_BH − σ∗. In order to better understand these correlations and thus gain greater insight into galaxy evolution, a large and robust dataset of SMBH mass measurements is required, particularly in the low- and high-mass regime where measurements are still relatively few. In this thesis, I present the results of the first mass measurement of the SMBH in the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 2513. The measurement is obtained via the method of cold molecular gas dynamics using high-resolution observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA). I first model the luminous mass of the galaxy by applying the multi-Gaussian expansion (MGE) method on a high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the galaxy. I then image the ALMA data with the Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA) package to obtain a velocity cube that can be fed into the KINematic Molecular Simulation (KinMS) routines for forward modelling in a Bayesian framework of the molecular gas dynamics. I obtain a best-fit measurement for the SMBH mass of (1.23 +0.14 −0.23) × 10⁹ M⊙ and corresponding J-band mass-to-light ratio M/L of 2.00 +1.82 −1.15 M⊙/L⊙,J , both at the 68% confidence level. The mass measurement is consistent with the M_BH −σ∗ relation, lying well within the scatter. As the first SMBH mass measurement to be conducted on this galaxy, this result presents an important contribution to the database of SMBH mass measurements in general and, moreover, to the growing sample of measurements conducted with cold molecular gas dynamics.
